  7.             OVERVIEW OF THE INTERNET RESOURCE GUIDE

  11. The NSF Network Service Center (NNSC) publishes a guide to resources
  12. on the Internet.  These resources include facilities such as
  13. supercomputers, databases, libraries, or specialized programs on the
  14. Internet which are available to large numbers of users.  Each entry in
  15. the guide contains a description of the resource, a description of who
  16. may use the resource, the type of access supported (email, ftp,
  17. telnet), and contact points for further information such as a phone
  18. number, email address, and name of a contact person where appropriate.
  19. Each listing is approximately one page of text.

  21. The categories of resources are (1) Computational Resources, (2)
  22. Library Catalogs, (3) Archives, (4) White Pages (information about
  23. users), (5) Networks, (6) Network Information Centers, and (7)
  24. Miscellaneous.

  32. The NNSC is eager to add descriptions of additional resources to the
  33. Guide.  If you are part of an organization that maintains a facility
  34. that should be included in the Guide, please send a message to:

  38. and we will send a template for you to use to submit your information.
  39. We will edit the submission, and check it with you before we publish
  40. it.  If you know anyone who might want to make a contribution, please
  41. pass on this message or send us a note giving us the name of a contact
  42. person.

  44. We need your help to make the guide a valuable tool for Internet users
  45. -- its effectiveness will depend on the active participation of the
  46. community of resource providers.

  49.                 How to Get the Internet Resource Guide
  50.  
  51. The Guide is published using an electronic submission and distribution
  52. system.  We have created electronic mailing lists for people who wish
  53. to receive additions the guide.  We distribute these in plain-text and
  54. PostScript form.  Recipients can print the pages locally and insert
  55. them into a looseleaf binder, which they can update when they receive
  56. new material.

  58. The Guide is also available, via anonymous FTP, from nnsc.nsf.net,
  59. in the directory "resource-guide".
  60.  
  61. There are three mailing lists available for updates to the Guide.
  62.  
  63.     1) sends updates via email in PostScript format
  64.     2) sends updates via email in plain-text (ASCII) format
  65.     3) sends an announcement via email when new entries are available
  66.        via FTP
  67.  
  68. If you would like your name added to one of these lists, please send a

  75. For sites that do not have ftp access, we have placed the Internet
  76. Resource Guide on the NNSC Info-Server.  The Info-Server is an
  77. automatic retrieval system that uses email.

  80. Info-Server, and the "index-resource-guide" file with a list of the
  81. sections and chapters in the Guide, send an email message to:

  91. For people who are unable to use either FTP or email, the NNSC also
  92. publishes printed copies of the Guide at a price of $25.00 per guide.
  93. This fee assists us in covering the costs associated with the hardcopy
  94. distribution of the guide, which we send by U.S. mail.  Please send a
