- OVERVIEW OF THE INTERNET RESOURCE GUIDE
-
- 11 November 1992
-
- The NSF Network Service Center (NNSC) publishes a guide to resources
- on the Internet. These resources include facilities such as
- supercomputers, databases, libraries, or specialized programs on the
- Internet which are available to large numbers of users. Each entry in
- the guide contains a description of the resource, a description of who
- may use the resource, the type of access supported (email, ftp,
- telnet), and contact points for further information such as a phone
- number, email address, and name of a contact person where appropriate.
- Each listing is approximately one page of text.
-
- The categories of resources are (1) Computational Resources, (2)
- Library Catalogs, (3) Archives, (4) White Pages (information about
- users), (5) Networks, (6) Network Information Centers, and (7)
- Miscellaneous.
-
- See the section "How to Get the Internet Resource Guide", below, for
- instructions on ways to get your copy of the Internet Resource Guide.
-
-
- Wanted: New Entries for Internet Resource Guide
-
- The NNSC is eager to add descriptions of additional resources to the
- Guide. If you are part of an organization that maintains a facility
- that should be included in the Guide, please send a message to:
-
- resource-guide@nnsc.nsf.net
-
- and we will send a template for you to use to submit your information.
- We will edit the submission, and check it with you before we publish
- it. If you know anyone who might want to make a contribution, please
- pass on this message or send us a note giving us the name of a contact
- person.
-
- We need your help to make the guide a valuable tool for Internet users
- -- its effectiveness will depend on the active participation of the
- community of resource providers.
-
-
- How to Get the Internet Resource Guide
-
- The Guide is published using an electronic submission and distribution
- system. We have created electronic mailing lists for people who wish
- to receive additions the guide. We distribute these in plain-text and
- PostScript form. Recipients can print the pages locally and insert
- them into a looseleaf binder, which they can update when they receive
- new material.
-
- The Guide is also available, via anonymous FTP, from nnsc.nsf.net,
- in the directory "resource-guide".
-
- There are three mailing lists available for updates to the Guide.
-
- 1) sends updates via email in PostScript format
- 2) sends updates via email in plain-text (ASCII) format
- 3) sends an announcement via email when new entries are available
- via FTP
-
- If you would like your name added to one of these lists, please send a
- message to:
-
- resource-guide-request@nnsc.nsf.net
-
- and be sure to let us know which list you prefer.
-
- For sites that do not have ftp access, we have placed the Internet
- Resource Guide on the NNSC Info-Server. The Info-Server is an
- automatic retrieval system that uses email.
-
- To receive the "help" file with instructions for using the
- Info-Server, and the "index-resource-guide" file with a list of the
- sections and chapters in the Guide, send an email message to:
-
- info-server@nnsc.nsf.net
-
- In the body of the message, type:
-
- Request: resource-guide
- Topic: help
- Topic: index-resource-guide
-
- For people who are unable to use either FTP or email, the NNSC also
- publishes printed copies of the Guide at a price of $25.00 per guide.
- This fee assists us in covering the costs associated with the hardcopy
- distribution of the guide, which we send by U.S. mail. Please send a
- check or money order made payable to: Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc., in
- the amount of $25.00 (U.S. dollars), to:
